Mental Health: Service Use in New Zealand 2004
This publication is the fourth New Zealand Health Information Service mental health publication to present data from the Mental Health Information National Collection.
Data for clients seen by District Health Boards in the 2004 calendar year are presented, including information about client demographics and services provided.
Clients seen in 2004
- District Health Boards saw 88,540 mental health clients in 2004, as reported to the Mental Health Information National Collection.
- Just over half of the clients seen in 2004 were male (51.0 percent).
- Of the clients seen in 2004, 17.3 percent identified themselves as Māori, 3.5 percent as Pacific, 2.3 percent as Asian and 76.9 percent were in the Other ethnic group, which is a composite group of all other ethnicities.
- Māori had the highest age-standardised rate of clients seen for males (2746 per 100,000) and for females (2163 per 100,000).
Services provided in 2004
- The most common services were individual treatment attendances, with 78,931 clients receiving this kind of service at least once in 2004 (89.1 percent).
- The second most common service was care co-ordination, with 33,249 clients receiving this service at least once during 2004 (37.6 percent).
- Community teams saw 47,399 clients in 2004, representing 54.7 percent of total clients seen.
