New Zealand Medical Practitioners 2000
The data in this publication was sourced from the annual medical workforce surveys carried out by the Medical Council of New Zealand in association with the invoicing for Annual Practising Certificates. It provides a snapshot overview of the active medical workforce in 2000.
Some of the key facts from the publication:
- In 2000, there were 8615 active medical practitioners, compared with 8616 in 1999.
- From 1980 to 2000, the proportion of New Zealand doctors who are female has increased from 16.4 percent to 32.6 percent of all doctors.
- The number of doctors who classified themselves as Māori was 198, representing 2.3 percent of active medical practitioners.
- In 2000, 36.7 percent of doctors were working as general practitioners; the next highest employment category was specialists, who made up 30.8 percent of the workforce.
- The proportion of doctors working in New Zealand who initially qualified from overseas universities was 34.5 percent in 2000
