Governance and Advisory Structure of IHTSDO
IHTSDO Groups
New Zealand is an active participant in several of the IHTSDO forums, committees, and working groups. Specifically, New Zealand has representation on the:- General Assembly
- Management Board
- Member Forum
- Mapping Special Interest Group (MapSIG)
- International Family Practice and General Practice Special Interest Group (IFP/GP SIG)
- Standing Committees.
General Assembly
The General Assembly is the highest authority of the Association. The General Assembly is collectively charged with assuring that the Purpose, Objects and Principles of the Association are pursued and that the interests of the IHTSDO are safeguarded.
The New Zealand General Assembly representative is Stewart Jessamine, Group Manager, Medsafe, Ministry of Health.
Management Board
The Management Board is the governing body that has overall responsibility for the management and direction of the IHTSDO.The New Zealand Management Board representatives are Ted Cizadlo, Group Manager, National Infrastructure and Systems, National Health Board, Ministry of Health and Kathy Farndon, Manager, Health Information Solutions and Standards, National Health Board, Ministry of Health.
Member Forum
The Member Forum acts as an advisory body to the Management Board. The Member Forum is a means for optimising the collaboration and coordination among member countries.The New Zealand Member Forum representatives are Christine Fowler, Manager, New Zealand National Release Centre, National Health Board, Ministry of Health and Tracy Thompson, Senior Analyst, Information Delivery and Operations, National Health Board, Ministry of Health.
Working Groups
Special Interest Groups (SIGs)
Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are open to anyone who wishes to participate in examining issues and undertaking tasks related to specified topics that are relevant to the IHTSDO and its members.Current SIGs are:

- Concept Model
- Education
- IHTSDO Workbench Developers
- Implementation
- International Family Practice/General Practice
- International Pathology & Laboratory Medicine
- Mapping
- Nursing
- Pharmacy
- Primary Care and ICPC Mapping
- Translation
Each of the IHTSDO groups has a collaborative space.

Project Groups (PGs)
Project groups are focused on completing specific tasks within a defined period of time.Mapping Special Interest/Project Group (MapSIG)
The mapping project group consists of representatives from the IHTSDO member countries and the World Health Organization (WHO). The representatives have knowledge in either terminology (SNOMED CT®) or classification (ICD-10) or both.The New Zealand MapSIG representative is Kathy Farndon, Manager, Health Information Solutions and Standards, National Health Board, Ministry of Health.
Several years ago the IHTSDO approved a project to review and develop an international standard semi-automated mapping between SNOMED CT® and The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) 2008 Edition.
The purpose of the SNOMED CT® to ICD-10 mapping project is to support the epidemiological, statistical and administrative reporting needs of the IHTSDO member countries and the WHO.
International Family Practice/General Practice Special Interest Group (IFP/GP SIG)
The Primary Care SIG has been changed to IFP/GP SIG with a Chair nominated by the World Organization of Family Doctors (Wonca) and with members nominated by various Colleges of General Practice/Family Medicine in IHTSDO Member Countries. A formal project group has been created to develop a FP/GP RefSet and map to ICPC-2 (International Classifications of Primary Care).The New Zealand IFP/GP SIG representatives are: Dr Tim Gardner, Twizel Medical Centre, Twizel and Dr Richard Medlicott, Island Bay Medical Centre, Wellington.
Standing Committees
The four standing Committees of the IHTSDO are the:- Content Committee
- Implementation and Innovation Committee
- Quality Assurance Committee
- Technical Committee.
The committees provide advice to the Management Board.
Quality Assurance Committee
The Quality Assurance Committee is responsible for the development and quality assurance of SNOMED CT® and its related standards and the Association's other terminology products in harmony with proper respect to external standards.The New Zealand Quality Assurance Committee representative is Dr Richard Medlicott, Island Bay Medical Centre, Wellington.
Technical Committee
The Technical Committee is responsible for and will advise the Management Board on the specification and monitoring of the technical framework and tools for the development and maintenance of SNOMED CT® and its related standards and the Association's other terminology products and framework for doing business.The New Zealand Technical Committee representative is Ted Cizadlo (Chair) Group Manager, National Infrastructure and Systems, National Health Board, Ministry of Health.
