NEW ZEALAND HEALTH INFORMATION SERVICE
Mental Health: Service use in New Zealand 2005/06 (provisional)
This provisional Mental Health: Service use in New Zealand 2005/06 information presents a summary of provisional mental health data in New Zealand for the year ended June 2006. The data were drawn from the National Mental Health Information Collection, and cover secondary mental health and alcohol and drug services funded by the Government. These figures must be regarded as provisional, because some data from some District Health Boards may not have been loaded yet.
The final figures will be presented in the Mental Health: Service use in New Zealand 2005/06 publication, due for release later in 2009.
District Health Boards saw 92,031 mental health clients in 2005/06, of which just over half were male (51.8 percent). Just over 19 percent identified as Māori, 4.2 percent as Pacific peoples and 2.7 percent as Asian. Community teams saw 49,930 clients, representing 54.3 percent of all clients seen. General practitioners were the most common source of referrals to mental health services, followed by self or relative referrals.
