Publicly Funded Hospital Casemix Events presents statistical information about patient discharges by diagnosis for publicly funded casemix events during the financial year ending 30 June 2007. It analyses the most frequent and major diagnoses for people presenting at publicly funded (public and private) hospitals by age, sex, and ethnicity.
Key points from the publication are:
- There were 544,341 casemix discharges from publicly funded hospitals an increase of 7.9 percent from 2001/02.
- Patients aged 65 years and older accounted for the highest percentage of total casemix discharges of 34.3 percent.
- There were 82,590 publicly funded casemix discharges reported for Māori (15.2 percent of total casemix discharges) and 37,880 for Pacific peoples (7.0 percent).
- The age-standardised casemix hospitalisation rates for Māori (15,079.1 per 100,000 population) and Pacific peoples (14,897.4 per 100,000 population) were more than a third higher than non-Māori/non-Pacific patients (11,131.0 per 100,000 population).
- Māori and Pacific patients on average spent fewer days in publicly funded hospitals (4.2 and 4.1 days respectively) compared to non-Māori/non-Pacific patients (4.6 days).
- The highest age-standardised casemix hospitalisation rate was from ischaemic heart diseases (419.8 per 100,000 population) and other forms of heart disease (348.0 per 100,000 population).
