Discharges from public hospitals

Number of hospital discharges, total population
  • In 2004/05 there were 870,352 discharges from publicly funded hospitals.
  • Females accounted for 55.5 percent of 2004/05 hospital inpatient discharges.
  • Inpatient hospitalisations (583,786) were 67.1 percent of total discharges with the remaining 286,566 discharged as Daycases.
Number of hospital discharges, Māori population
  • Discharges for Māori (143,919) accounted for 16.5 percent of total discharges in 2004/05.
  • Māori female hospitalisations were 55.9 percent of total discharges for Māori in 2004/05.
  • Māori inpatient hospitalisations (91,257) were 63.4 percent of total discharges.
Public hospital discharges by age
  • Of total discharges, children aged from 0-4 years were the largest group discharged from a public hospital (124,296 or 14.3% of total discharges) followed by 30 -34 year olds (59879 or 6.9% of total discharges)
  • Of discharges for Māori, children aged between 0-4 years were the largest group discharged from a public hospital (29,421 or 20.4 % of total Māori discharges) followed by the 20-24 year age group at 11,831 or 8.2% of total Māori discharges)
Age Standardised Rates for public hospital discharges
  • The age-standardised discharge rate for the total population was 20,107 per 100,000 population
  • The age-standardised discharge rate for Māori was 26,110 per 100,000 Māori population

Hospital cases involving injury and poisoning

Total population
  • For the total population there were 142,820 discharges involving injury and poisoning in 2004/05.
  • Males accounted for 53.5 percent of these cases.
Māori population
  • There were 20,295 discharges for Māori in 2004/05 which involved injury and poisoning.
  • Males accounted for 60.2 percent of injury cases for Māori.
Age Standardised Rates for public hospital discharges involving injury and poisoning
  • The age-standardised discharge rate for the total population was 3,118 per 100,000 population
  • The age-standardised discharge rate for Māori was 3,661 per 100,000 Māori population
  • Total numbers of procedures undertaken in publicly funded hospitals
Total population
  • In 2004/05 there were 1,129,489 procedures undertaken in publicly funded hospitals.
  • Females accounted for 56 percent of 2004/05 procedures undertaken in publicly funded hospitals
  • 33 percent of all procedures (367,734) were undertaken as a daycase.
